What Is The Difference Between Botox & Dermal Fillers?

You’ve spent the last several months looking at your reflection in the mirror and you have finally made the decision to do something about those fine lines and wrinkles that are gradually appearing around your eyes, forehead, and mouth.

It’s time to slow down the signs of aging by being proactive early on. Now comes the decision of what type of treatment to use.  Botox and dermal fillers are both very popular choices, but what is the difference?

Botox

Botox contains the botulinum toxin which is a neurotoxin that stops muscle movement. Small, regulated amounts of this substance are injected into the muscles of the face that are responsible for the “expression lines” that we see appearing as we age. Botox works by blocking the nerve signals in the muscles around the injection site. When the nerve signals are blocked, the muscles are temporarily frozen.

Without movement, certain lines and wrinkles can be softened, reduced, or removed completely.  Since Botox works only on wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement (the expression lines), it will not work on lines and wrinkles caused by loss of plumpness in the face due to aging or even dramatic weight loss.

A typical office visit for Botox injections ranges from 30 to 60 minutes. Results from using Botox last 3 to 4 months and repeated treatments are necessary for continued success.

There are some possible side effects from this treatment, which are only temporary since Botox wears off over time. These side effects may include drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow if the injection is near the eye, weakness or nearby muscles, rashes, itching, pain, swelling, numbness, headache, or nausea.

While there are possible side effects, it is important to remember that Botox has been used safely in millions of procedures each year according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylaneare natural substances that are designed to be injected beneath the surface of the skin to add volume and fullness. There are a variety of substances that are used such as calcium hydroxylapatite (a mineral-like compound found in bones), and hyaluronic acid (found in tissues in the body and add plumpness to the skin). Your providers will recommend the one that is best for you during your consultation.

Treatments usually take between 30 and 60 minutes per visit. Fillers can last from 6 to 24 months or even longer. Different types of fillers are designed to treat various signs of aging. Some plump up lips, others fill in shallow areas on the face, some decrease the wrinkle under the eyes, and others can even soften the look of scars.

As with any treatment, there can be side effects with fillers. These may include rash, itching, redness, bruising, swelling, lumps from overcorrection, and the ability to feel the filler material under the skin. These conditions are temporary and can be controlled under your provider’s care.

Summary

In summary, Botox freezes the muscles that are responsible for creases and wrinkles that are caused by facial expressions. The results last 3 – 4 months.

Dermal fillers are substances that fill in and plump up areas where the patient has lost volume and smoothness. Results from fillers can last from 6 – 18 months, depending on which type is used.

Fillers tend to cost more than Botox and since prices vary by providers, your consultation will include the cost of the treatment plans that will work for you.

Patients have experienced great results with both Botox and dermal fillers and both are safe and effective ways to improve your overall appearance.
