How Can I Reduce the Appearance of Melasma?

Melasma is a common skin problem that causes brown to gray patches on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, upper lip, forearms, and neck. These patches can be especially bothersome when they occur on the face because they create an uneven skin tone that can be difficult to cover with makeup. Melasma can be caused by hormones, pregnancy, birth control pills, or sun exposure. When melasma is caused by hormonal changes, it will sometimes fade away as the body adjusts, but in other cases, fading on its own is not likely. So, what can be done to reduce the appearance of melasma?

BBL Treatments

Broadband Light (BBL) is an innovative technology that allows physicians to precisely treat age spots, sun damage, acne, uneven skin texture, and other conditions. The light energy that is delivered by the BBL works by heating the upper layers of the skin. The targeted areas absorb the heat which stimulates the skin cells to regenerate new collagen, which will lead to increased skin firmness, smoother texture, and younger looking skin. It is safe, noninvasive, and gentle.

The treatment will take between 5 and 30 minutes depending on the size and number of areas being treated. During the procedure, patients report feeling a warm sensation (similar to a rubber band snap) as the light is absorbed by the skin. When the treatment is over you may experience some redness that will fade away within a few hours. After a period of time, you will notice that any dark areas being treated will begin to fade. Results will depend on your condition, the area being treated and the number of treatments in your care plan. Your physician will be able to provide you with the details of your treatment at your initial consultation.

The IPL Photofacial

The IPL Photofacial, also known as IPL Photorejuvenation is an Intense Pulsed Light treatment that is used to create a smoother and more even skin tone. The IPL treatment can improve the look of sun damage, age spots and sun-induced freckles, liver spots and other benign brown pigments, spider veins (broken capillaries), scarring, and enlarged pores.

How Does the IPL Photofacial Work?

A broad spectrum of light is transmitted through a small handpiece that is placed over the skin. The light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed by melanin when treating pigmented lesions. The body’s own natural processes then remove the injured tissue from the skin.

During the treatment, a numbing cream is put on your skin because of the high level of heat that is used and because the treatment can feel like the sting of an elastic band snap. A cooling gel will also be used to counteract the heating sensation that you will experience during the treatment. After the treatment, patients may feel like they are sunburned, but this feeling subsides within a few hours. You will be asked to avoid hot water and sun exposure for 2 days and to always use sunscreen when enjoying the outdoors. The dark spots on your skin may appear to darken for up to two weeks post-treatment while your body works to shed the damaged tissue naturally.

An IPL treatment averages 30 minutes per session. Typically, patients need anywhere from 3-5 treatments that are spaced 4 weeks apart to achieve their desired results. There is no downtime with the IPL Photofacial treatment.
