It’s very common and usually harmless, but hyperpigmentation can often make a person feel less confident and more self-conscious about how they look. These areas of darker skin are caused when excess melanin forms deposits in the skin. The good news is that you don’t have to let these dark spots on your skin rob you of your self-confidence! There are great ways to treat your hyperpigmentation.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin forms deposits in the skin. This condition affects all skin colors and is caused by any number of factors. Some common causes include hormonal changes, years of sun exposure and sun damage, acne, pregnancy, and the use of birth control pills, chemotherapy drugs, antibiotics, and other medications.

Can I Prevent It?

Because sun exposure is one of the leading contributors to the development of hyperpigmentation, the best way to prevent sun spots is to protect yourself from sun exposure. It is best to limit your skin’s exposure to the sun by avoiding being in the direct sunlight during the most intense hours of the day. Wearing sun hats, sun glasses, and protective clothing during time spent in the sun is also helpful in preventing hyperpigmentation. The regular use of sunscreen is probably the most obvious way to prevent sun damage and works best when reapplied at regular intervals during sun exposure. Even with all of these precautions, it is still possible to develop hyperpigmentation from sun exposure and from other hormonal and environmental factors.

How Can I Reduce the Appearance of Hyperpigmentation?

After you take all of the precautions that you can to avoid the condition, and hyperpigmentation occurs there are still some very effective treatments to reduce the look of hyperpigmentation. One of these treatments is called the Halo Laser Treatment. This treatment can begin to rescue your skin in as little as 1 to 3 weeks. It uses two types of laser wavelengths, ablative and non-ablative, to produce a gorgeous, even complexion. The process has been described as “aerating and resurfacing” the skin because a laser “pokes tiny columns of heat into the skin leaving some areas intact” This stimulates the skin’s collagen production with faster healing times. By targeting both the epidermis and dermis, the Halo Laser can reduce the appearance of pore size, correct sun damage, eliminate brown spots, and even out skin texture. Treatments take approximately one hour and depending on the condition of the skin, a patient may need more than one treatment. Within 1 to 3 weeks patients will see the dead cells being shed and new cells appearing. There is no downtime with the Halo Laser Treatment, although there may be minor swelling for 1 – 3 days and flaky skin for 1 – 3 weeks.

Another effective treatment is the BBL Treatment or Broadband Light treatment. Broadband Light (BBL) is an innovative technology that allows physicians to precisely treat age spots, sun damage, acne, uneven skin texture, and other conditions. The light energy that is delivered by the BBL works by heating the upper layers of the skin. The targeted areas absorb the heat which stimulates the skin cells to regenerate new collagen, which will lead to increased skin firmness, smoother texture, and younger looking skin. It is safe, noninvasive, and gentle. The treatment takes approximately 30 minutes depending on the size and number of areas being treated. During the treatment, patients report feeling a warm sensation similar to a rubber band snap as the light is absorbed by the skin.  When the treatment is over patients may have some redness that will fade away within a few hours. In the weeks after that, any dark areas being treated will begin to fade and become more even. Some pigmented spots will fade and even flake off leaving smoother, softer skin.

Very comfortable atmosphere. Extremely informative on choices/best options for personal results.
