What is Acne?
Acne is an inflammatory disease of the skin. It is most common
and severe in the teenage years but can continue into adulthood.
Acne leads to skin redness, pimples and blackheads. When uncontrolled,
acne can eventually lead to scarring. By addressing the cause
of acne, healing the skin and preventing future outbreaks,
Juvanew Acne Care offers a comprehensive acne treatment system.
Juvanew Medspa offers a wide range of treatment options that
can significantly reduce acne in most cases. Recent advances
in technology also offer several procedures that reduce the
appearance of acne scars and drastically improve the appearance
of clients who have suffered from serious acne.

Our Acne Facial treats inflamed, irritated, acneic skin
types and includes a detoxifying masque and soothing

without drying and gives the skin the hydration it needs.
This treatment is ideal for the oily, acneic skin type
sensitive to other products.

Moisturizers, cleansers, peels and other topical products are
an important tool in controlling acne. Juvanew Medspa carries
a complete line of prescription and non-prescription cosmeceuticals.

Microdermabrasion removes dead skin and helps prevent and dislodge
follicle plugs. When used as part of an acne treatment program,
microdermabrasion can significantly enhance the clearing of
active pimples.

Juvanew Medspa offers a wide variety of un-buffered chemical
peels suited to various skin types, including Acne Clarifying
Acid, Salicylic Acid, TCA and Modified Jessner’s.
Laser Acne Treatment
Our Nd:YAG laser prevents and reduces active acne inflammation.
It eradicates the bacteria causing the inflammation and also
promotes collagen regeneration to improve the tone and texture
and the skin. Redness lasting a few minutes after the procedure
and mild discomfort are possible side effects. Many clients
respond to laser treatments even when they have failed to respond
to other treatments.

Causes of Acne
Acne forms along a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland. Sebaceous
glands produce a substance called sebum, or oil. The hormonal changes of adolescence
increase the size of sebaceous glands and increase sebum production. The following
lead to the development of acne:
An overabundance of dead skin cells blocking hair follicles
and cause a buildup of sebum. Sebum combines with the dead
skin cells to form a plug of the follicle. The cause of the
overabundance of dead skin cells and plugging is unknown.
A normal facial bacterium known as Propionibacterium causes
acne to begin growing excessively in the increased sebum
leading to inflammation of the follicle.
The inflammation leads to a breakdown of the follicle. When
the follicle breaks down, the fatty sebum and skin cells
erupt to the surface and form a pimple.
Excess moisture and skin irritation further increase the
inflammation.
Prevention of Acne
Acne prevention requires a treatment plan to reduce the amount
of dead skin cells and sebum.
1. Correctly formulated facial washes help to reduce skin
oiliness and sebum production. Washes that contain salicylic
acid are most effective. Washes that contain alpha hydroxyl
acids (AHA) add to the effect. These acids also help to clean
out follicles and begin the exfoliation of dead cells.
2. Exfoliating scrubs help prevent the buildup of dead skin
cells and help prevent the blockage of the hair follicles.
Higher concentrations of the acids mentioned above can be
added two to three times a week to further remove dead skin
cells and decrease sebum production. a
3. Avoid oil-based cosmetics. Unfortunately, some products
used to conceal pimples actually worsen the problem. The
use of Colorescience® Micronized Mineral Makeup avoids this
problem. Colorescience® mineral sun protection can also be
used by men to cover pimples.
4. Avoid excess moisture such as perspiration. The facial
washes and exfoliants described above help control excess
moisture. Using acid washes after exercise or sweating can
also help.
5. Avoid skin irritation from excess scrubbing, helmets,
pads and clothing. The use of oil-free moisturizers can also
reduce the effects of skin irritation.
Acne Scars
Acne scars can be significantly reduced using a combination
of techniques. Even the most severe cases of complex acne
scarring can be precisely and rapidly treated using our erbium
laser for skin resurfacing. Microdermabrasion and chemical
peels decrease the depth of the scars, smooth the skin and
help to even skin tone. Juvanew Medspa provides all of these
procedures for our clients. A personal consultation can help
determine the best regimen for you. Call 214-771-4611 to
schedule a consultation.
